Susan Ngoc Wagstaff is a first grade educator in the Parkrose School District in Portland, Oregon, and the vibrant daughter of Vietnamese and Cambodian immigrants. Her teaching philosophy centers on playful inquiry, social emotional learning, and social justice, creating an inclusive and compassionate classroom where every child feels seen and valued.
Born into a rich cultural tapestry, Susan’s upbringing inspires her passion for connection and community. Outside the classroom, she is a community builder who celebrates shared experiences through food, art, and time in nature, fostering belonging and togetherness wherever she goes.
In her classroom, Susan encourages curiosity and exploration, helping students learn through play while developing empathy and understanding. Her commitment to equity and joy in education extends beyond academics, nurturing values of kindness, collaboration, and cultural awareness.
Now in her second year as an advisor for the Asian Youth Society, an Asian student affinity group, Susan supports high school students in exploring and celebrating their cultural identities. Through this work, she helps promote unity and inclusion across the school community.
Outside of teaching, Susan continues to give back by organizing and participating in community events that celebrate diversity and connection. Her warmth, creativity, and dedication to education reflect her belief in the transformative power of community and the importance of learning with both heart and purpose.
